3D Secure
Securely process online credit card payments with 3D Secure and fraud prevention
3D Secure: Secure online payment with credit card
Fraud leads to extra costs. With 3D Secure (3DS), the card issuer (bank) verifies the identity of the cardholder for online payments, via a code, password, or biometric verification (fingerprint/facial recognition).
3D Secure is standard for American Express, Mastercard, and Visa.
Card-specific security
| Card type | Security / Technology | Authentication method(s) |
|---|---|---|
| American Express | SafeKey | One-time code via email or SMS |
| MasterCard | Identity Check | Biometrics via app (fingerprint/face) |
| Visa | Visa Secure | SMS code or app verification (biometrics iOS/Android) |
Tip: Make sure your webshop fully supports 3D Secure transactions to limit the risk of chargebacks.
Payments up to €30: LVP exemption
- SCA is not mandatory for payments < €30.
- Note: In the event of a fraud chargeback, you are liable for the costs, unless you can prove that the cardholder made the payment themselves.
Authentication Flow
| Flow type | Operation | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Frictionless | Bank automatically identifies payer | Faster, higher conversion |
| Challenge | Cardholder must confirm via app/PIN code | Additional security for risky transactions |
Enforce Challenge (Optimize Setting)
| Option | Operation |
|---|---|
| Standard | The bank determines the flow |
| Frictionless preferred | Merchant prefers frictionless |
| Preferred Challenge | Merchant prefers challenge; fallback to frictionless |
| Challenger required | If the bank does not offer a challenge, authentication is aborted. |
