Display of In-Store AUTH/CAPTURE Transactions

Read how different banks display AUTH/CAPTURE transactions to consumers and why the same payment can appear differently depending on the bank.

When a payment is processed via an AUTH/CAPTURE flow, an authorisation (reservation) is first placed on the payment card. Only once the merchant captures the payment is the final amount debited.

Although the processing of the transaction is the same for all banks, the way it is displayed to the consumer differs. This depends on the cardholder's bank and is beyond Pay.'s control.

The original transaction is updated to the final amount. As a result, it is no longer visible afterwards that a reservation for a different amount existed previously. The reservation is being overwritten. As a result, it is less clearly visible that the amount has changed.

Note: Banks can change the way they display transactions at any time. This article is based on the current display as known to Pay.

ℹ️ Explanation
The stars indicate how transparent the transaction history is for the consumer. This only takes into account the way the bank presents an AUTH/CAPTURE transaction. More stars mean the consumer can more easily follow how the reservation was converted into the final debit. The rating says nothing about the quality or reliability of the bank.

Why Does This Differ per Bank?

Every bank decides for itself how an authorisation and a later capture are displayed in the banking environment or mobile app. There is no uniform standard for this.

As a result, depending on their bank, a consumer may, for the same AUTH/CAPTURE transaction, for example:

  • see two transactions;
  • see one updated transaction;
  • or temporarily see three transactions.

This does not mean that the payment was processed multiple times. It is solely a difference in the way the bank presents the transaction.
