Why does Pay.Pos sometimes ask for a PIN code, and why is the PIN pad scrambled?
Learn why a PIN is sometimes required for SoftPOS payments and why the keypad looks scrambled.
Why is a PIN sometimes required in Pay.Pos (SoftPOS)?
With Pay.Pos on Android, a PIN is usually not required, even for higher amounts. Up to certain thresholds, the app attempts to process the transaction without additional verification.
However, the customer’s issuing bank may occasionally require extra security. In such cases, the Pay.Pos app will display a PIN entry screen. Once the PIN is entered, the transaction is retried and can be completed successfully.
Why is the keypad scrambled?
Since Pay.Pos runs on a standard Android device rather than a certified payment terminal, card schemes require an additional security measure: the scrambled keypad. This means the digits appear in a random order each time.
-
Only about 4% of transactions require a PIN.
-
In 98% of cases, the PIN is entered correctly on the first try.
Customers adapt quickly, and this measure increases the security of PIN entry on non-secure devices.
