Static IP address for payment terminals (en)
Recommended for fixed payment terminals with LAN connections
Our payment terminals are delivered with DHCP enabled by default. This means the device automatically receives an IP address from the merchant’s network.
For fixed payment terminals connected through a LAN/wired network connection, Pay. recommends always using a static IP address. Pay. specifically recommends configuring this through a DHCP reservation based on the terminal’s MAC address within the merchant’s network.
This combines the advantages of a fixed IP address with the convenience and flexibility of DHCP.
Pay. strongly advises against manually configuring the static IP address directly on the payment terminal itself.
Why not?
When network settings change, such as:
- changes to the router or firewall
- subnet or gateway modifications
- DNS setting changes
- DHCP range changes
the terminal may no longer be able to connect to the internet or the payment processor.
In practice, this can be difficult for both the merchant and our support department to identify, because the terminal appears offline while the root cause is not immediately visible.
By using a DHCP reservation, the terminal will continue to automatically receive the correct network settings while keeping the same IP address.
Why does Pay. recommend a static IP address?
A fixed IP address for the payment terminal provides a more stable and manageable network connection.
Benefits of a static IP through DHCP reservation
- The terminal always receives the same IP address
- Reduced risk of IP conflicts within the network
- Improved network stability
- Easier network device management
- Faster troubleshooting of network issues
- No need for manual network configuration on the device itself
Identifying MAC addresses of payment terminals
When creating a DHCP reservation, it may be necessary to identify the MAC address of the payment terminal.
The prefixes (OUIs) below are commonly used by payment terminals from different vendors.
| Vendor | Common MAC prefixes (OUI) |
|---|---|
| PAX Technology | 00:17:6F, 54:81:2D, C8:40:52, A0:44:B7, A0:4F:E4, B8:0E:1D, E0:CD:CF, 78:64:C0, 98:FA:9B |
| Sunmi | 1C:1A:1B, 74:F7:F6 |
| Worldline |
|
Note: these are common MAC prefixes, but terminals may also use different prefixes. Always verify the full MAC address of the device.
If you cannot find the MAC address of the terminal, please contact our support department.

Advice for merchants and system administrators
Pay. recommends:
- Leaving the terminal configured for DHCP
- Creating a DHCP reservation in the router, firewall, or DHCP server
- Linking the terminal’s MAC address to a fixed IP address
- Reserving the selected IP address outside the normal DHCP pool whenever possible
This provides the benefits of a static IP address without the disadvantages of manual configuration on the device itself.
